هدف از تالیف کتاب مشاوره و روان درمانی گروهی با کودکان و نوجوانان کمک به ارتقاء سلامت روانی کودکان و نوجوان می‌باشد. خانه، مدرسه و جامعه مکان‌هایی هستند که کودکان بیشترین تجارب معنادار زندگی را بدست می آورند و گاهی به محیط های تهدید کننده و ناسالمی تبدیل می‌شوند. گاهی حمایت عاطفی از کودکان و نوجوانان در این محیط ها از بین رفته و موجب آسیب و رنجش آنان از سرزنش ها، طرد شدن و سوء رفتار اجتماعی و عاطفی می گردد و در فرایند کنار آمدن با مشکلات موقعیتی یا رشدی که برایشان پیش می آید تنها هستند.
برخلاف بزرگسالان که هنگام رویارویی با مشکلات، ممکن است در جستجوی کمک و حمایت حرفه ای باشند، کودکان و نوجوانان دوست ندارند، چنین کاری را انجام دهند و وقتی چنین مشکلاتی برای آنان پیش می آید اغلب در مقابل آن مقاومت می کنند. اگر چه از بزرگسالان انتظار زیادی دارند که آنها را در زندگی مورد حمایت قرار دهند، ولی به دلایل مختلف واقعی یا ذهنی اغلب ناامید می‌شوند. این مشکل در مورد کودکان و نوجوانانی که مشکلات هویتی دارند، بیشتر صدق می‌کند. بسیاری از کودکان معمولی در کشمکش با عوامل فشارزا و حوادث زندگی تنها می‌مانند.
